ASTM F2913 - Test Standard for Measuring the Footwear and Flooring Coefficient of Friction for Evaluation

ASTM F2913 is a standard specification published by ASTM International. It is titled "Standard Test Method for Measuring the Coefficient of Friction for Evaluation of Slip Performance of Footwear and Test Surfaces/Flooring Using a Whole Shoe Tester."

Description / Abstract:

ASTM F2913, 2019 Edition, January 1, 2019 - Standard Test Method for Measuring the Coefficient of Friction for Evaluation of Slip Performance of Footwear and Test Surfaces/Flooring Using a Whole Shoe Tester

This test method determines the dynamic coefficient of friction between footwear and floorings under reproducible laboratory conditions for evaluating relative slip performance. The method is applicable to all types of footwear, outsole units, heel top lifts and sheet soling materials, also to most types of floorings, including matting and stair nosing, and surface contaminants on the flooring surface, including but not limited to liquid water, ice, oil and grease. The method may also be applied to surfaces such as block pavers, turf and gravel.

This standard provides a method for evaluating the slip resistance of footwear and test surfaces by measuring the coefficient of friction (COF). The COF is a measure of the frictional forces between the shoe sole and the test surface, and it helps determine the slip resistance characteristics of the footwear.

The ASTM F2913 standard outlines the testing procedure using a whole shoe tester, which simulates actual walking conditions. The test evaluates the slip resistance of footwear on various surfaces, including dry surfaces, contaminated surfaces (such as water or oil), and surfaces with different levels of roughness.

The results obtained from testing according to ASTM F2913 can be used to compare different types of footwear or to assess the slip resistance performance of footwear for specific applications or environments.

It's important to note that standards may evolve over time, so it's always a good idea to refer to the latest version of the ASTM F2913 standard for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
