Schober Abrasion Tester Operation Guide

The Schober Abrasion Tester adopts a rotational wear testing method to evaluate the abrasion resistance of automotive interior materials, especially leather coatings and surface finishes. It is a reliable instrument for testing the durability of coatings, films, and fabrics under continuous friction.

Test Principle

A circular specimen is mounted on a rotating test head. During the test, the specimen rubs against an abrasive material (sandpaper) under a specified speed, pressure, and number of rotations in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions.

The abrasive material and the specimen remain in linear contact, generating tangential frictional forces. The rotation direction changes automatically after every 100 cycles (or as preset).

The test results are evaluated based on mass loss or surface damage (holes, wear marks), which indicate the material’s abrasion resistance performance.

Operation Method

Specimen Preparation

Mount the pre-conditioned specimen (after temperature and humidity treatment) on the test fixture to form the rotating test head.

Height Adjustment

Adjust the protruding height of the test head using the arc-height gauge according to the relevant standard—typically between 5–8 mm.

Test Head Installation

Place the test head onto the mounting plate of the instrument. Align the locating pin on the plate with the positioning hole of the test head, then secure it tightly.

Abrasive Material Installation

Mount the abrasive sandpaper onto the lower surface of the pressure plate using the clamping fixture. Lock the clamp to ensure the sandpaper is flat and firmly installed.

Lower the Pressure Plate

Manually pull the lift lock lever on the right side of the pressure plate outward and lower the pressure plate until the sandpaper contacts the specimen surface.

Load the Test Weight

Install the required weight (available options: 1500 g, 1000 g, 500 g, 250 g, 100 g, 50 g) on the weight shaft above the pressure plate.

Select the appropriate pressure based on the specimen’s area and material density to apply a uniform and controlled load during the friction test.

Application

The Schober Abrasion Tester is widely used for testing:

Automotive interior leathers and coatings

Synthetic leather and decorative films

Textile materials and plastic surfaces

Furniture and aviation interior materials

By simulating repetitive rotational wear, it provides accurate and repeatable results for quality control, material development, and comparative testing.
