Abrasion resistance of leather test details

The abrasion resistance of leather is the resistance of leather to wear and tear, which is an important cause of damage to leather. Abrasion resistance testing of leather is still an indispensable measure of its quality and is of great importance in assessing the fastness of leather to wear.

The Abrasion Resistance Tester is an important instrument for measuring the performance and durability of leather products in use. During the test, the abrasion resistance of the specimen is determined by applying friction in the tangential direction to a rotating specimen by means of a friction component.

Fastness to Friction.

It is the degree to which the colour and coating of the leather surface changes or is transferred when the leather is rubbed. Fastness to friction test with standard white lining cloth or white wool sticky, under a certain pressure (test head mass 500g, 1000g ), in the leather surface for reciprocal friction (dry white lining cloth or white wool sticky for reciprocal friction for dry friction, with wet white lining cloth or white wool sticky for reciprocal friction for wet friction), and use standard grey sample card to assess the leather colour change and white lining cloth or white wool sticky The change in colour of the leather and the staining of the white lining or white wool.

Test methods for determining the abrasion resistance of leather:

There are two methods for determining the abrasion resistance of leather, namely the end point method and the change in appearance method.

End point method.

The number of rotations required to remove 1 mm of leather is the thickness index of abrasion resistance and the number of rotations is recorded as an indicator of abrasion resistance.

Change in appearance method:

After a certain number of rubbing cycles, the test specimen is observed to change in appearance, such as colour change, wear and other changes in appearance, as an indicator of wear resistance.

Test apparatus:

There are many different types of fabric flat abrasers, but the one most used in the testing industry is the Martindale Abrasion And Pilling Tester, so the flat abrasion method is often referred to as the Martindale friction testing machine method.

Martindale Abrasion And Pilling Tester

Test principle:

A circular specimen mounted in a Martindale abrasion tester specimen jig is rubbed under a specified load, and the specimen jig is free to rotate around its axis perpendicular to the horizontal plane. The abrasion resistance of the leather is determined according to the total number of times the specimen is rubbed to break.

Test method:

The test is carried out by placing a test specimen of a certain size in contact with a standard abrasive under a specified pressure and causing the specimen to move in a Lissajous trajectory relative to the abrasive, so that the test specimen is subjected to uniform wear in multiple directions.
